The White Bear, Kennington: A Proper Local Pub in SE11

Just a few minutes from Kennington station, The White Bear is one of my favourite local pubs — particularly for a Sunday roast and, when the weather behaves, one of the best pub gardens around Kennington.

One of the things I want to do with these local pieces is talk about the places I actually use rather than simply produce another generic guide to living in SE11.

The White Bear is a particularly easy one to start with. It’s at 138 Kennington Park Road, around the corner from where I live and close to the two properties we currently have for sale around Vauxhall Grove and Clapham Road.

It’s also only a few minutes’ walk from Kennington Underground station — the pub itself describes the walk as around five minutes — so despite feeling like a proper neighbourhood pub, it’s incredibly accessible.

Much Bigger Than It Looks

From Kennington Park Road, The White Bear is relatively understated.

There’s a small outside area at the front with tables where you can sit with a beer and watch Kennington go by. It’s nice in its own right, but it doesn't really prepare you for what’s behind the front door.

The pub is a bit of a Tardis.

Walk through and it keeps going, eventually opening out into a genuinely impressive garden at the back. The White Bear calls it its Garden Restaurant, but for me it’s simply my favourite pub garden in the area.

It’s one of those places that works particularly well on a warm afternoon when you start with the intention of having one drink and realise several hours later that you’re still there.

My Pick for a Sunday Roast

The garden might be my favourite part in summer, but Sunday is probably when I like The White Bear most.

If someone asked me where I’d go locally for a Sunday roast, this would be very high on the list.

The pub specialises in seasonal British food and makes quite a feature of its Sunday lunches, with traditional roasts, seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and gravy. There are vegetarian and vegan options too.

More importantly from my perspective, I've actually eaten the roast here — and it’s excellent.

That distinction matters to me with these neighbourhood guides. I'm not recommending somewhere because I've found a photograph of a roast online or because it's conveniently located near a property we're selling. It's somewhere I would genuinely choose to go myself.

The Service Is Part of It

Something else I’ve always found particularly good here is the service.

The White Bear feels like a proper local pub rather than somewhere that happens to serve food. The staff are friendly and attentive without everything feeling overly formal, and that makes a difference when somewhere is supposed to be your neighbourhood local.

That experience isn't unique to me either: the pub highlights customer reviews praising its attentive and welcoming service, alongside its food and atmosphere.

It's the sort of place that works equally well for dropping in for a drink, meeting someone for dinner or settling in for a long Sunday lunch.

A Pub With Some History

There's quite a bit more history here than you might initially realise too.

The White Bear dates its history in Kennington back to 1780, and the interior mixes the traditional elements you'd expect from a long-established London pub — including its original wooden bar — with a more contemporary feel and eclectic artwork.

That feels quite appropriate for Kennington generally.

It's an area where you can find Georgian squares and historic pubs alongside newer apartments, cafés and restaurants, all within a remarkably small radius.

Why Places Like This Matter When Buying a Home

When we're marketing a property, it's obviously important to talk about square footage, bedrooms, transport and the practicalities of the home itself.

But those aren't necessarily the things that determine whether you actually enjoy living somewhere.

For me, it's being able to leave home and walk to a good pub. It's knowing where I'd go for Sunday lunch. It's having somewhere with a proper garden when London gets a sunny afternoon. It's being able to walk to Oval, Vauxhall or the river rather than having to plan everything around a Tube journey.

The White Bear is one of those places that makes Kennington feel like a neighbourhood rather than simply a convenient Zone 2 location.

And that's particularly relevant to the homes we're currently marketing nearby. Our Clapham Road property by Oval and Vauxhall Grove apartment both sit within easy reach of here, meaning the places I'm writing about in their area guides aren't theoretical recommendations.

They're the same places I use living locally myself.
